Why Basenji My husband is allergic to many dog breeds as well as horses and I desperately wanted a dog in the family. I wanted my husband Kenneth and the children to experience the same joy and love for dogs that I felt. But was there a dog breed that was right for our family and Kenneth’s allergic problems? We wanted a small dog , with a short coat , a good family and show dog.We checked around, surfed on the Internet and found our dream dog- the basenji! After much persuasion on the kids and my part, we began our basenji-search. We visited a near by kennel, Zannavikens Basenjis and met there our now close friends Rune and Gerd Ivarsson with their 4 basenjis, Issa, Milou, Zimone and Zinnja . We were hooked after that first visit!! We were especially drawn to the tricolor bitches Issa and Zinnja, they just glowed! Kenneth came to the glad realization that after many a visits , he was not the least bit allergic! The scentless, barkless, catlike , smart, rascal of a little dog basenji was the breed for us! They fit our family to a tee! We loved the part about them being so unusual and were fascinated with their original culture and use in Africa. Runes stories were so interesting. I could see the basenjis in front of me, waiting patiently by the fire as the African hunters ate and gave the swift hunting dogs some left overs.I could imagine the basenjis hunting in the wild, quietly, swiftly finding their prey, working together with their African owners. A basenji is a dog well worth respecting! The Ivarssons bitch Issa didn’t breed that autumn and we’d been saving our money for well over a year. We didn’t want to wait any longer so we decided to look elsewhere, but finding our beautiful tricolor bitch Tindra was easier said than done. We called just about every breeder in Sweden and there were no tricolor bitches born that winter, not a one! We finally bought Tindra from Liv-Irene Nyflöt in Norway. We drove the 6-hour drive in the snowy Swedish winter, in cold month of January with high expectations and longing. When we finally saw her and held her in our arms, we knew…..Tindra was the most beautiful, shiny black, tricolor puppy we’d ever laid eyes on. She absolutely glowed! She was a real “go getter” with a magical glimt in her eye, very playful and alert. Tindra is the sweetest , most patient little basenji bitch. Great with the kids, loves to cuddle and absolutely shines with a proudness seldom seen in others. We love you Tindra!
Then one became two………Rune called me one winterday and asked if we knew anyone that wanted to be a “foster owner” to a brindle basenji dog from Norway? Well, animal lover as I am, I couldn’t resist and once again persvaded my loving husband that we absolutely needed another basenji. I mean Tinf´dra was all alone and dogs are flock animals, right? Said and done, this time we would have a basenji from Ingeborg Molnes in Vigra Norway. Another 6 hour winter trip to Norway and there he was….our beautiful , cute-faced brindle boy Zomba. It was love at first site!! He was such a chubby little guy, shy and loving all at the same time. Rune, his son Mattias and I picked him up from the airport in Oslo, where Ingeborgs grandson delivered him. We took turns cuddeling with him in the back seat the whole way home to Sweden. Thank- you Rune for giving us our sweet boy Zomba! Our striped little sweetheart, always eager to please and as playful now as he was as a puppy. He’ll do anything for food and loves his mommy!!me!! We love you Zomba!!
Once a Basenji, always a Basenji!
